What Do We Do?

The Marion County Pioneer Cemetery Commission (MCPCC) was formed to identify, restore, and maintain the pioneer cemeteries of Marion County, Iowa. The Commission was established by the Marion County Board of Supervisors in June 2011.

What Is a Pioneer Cemetery?

Iowa Code defines a pioneer cemetery as one that has had 12 or fewer burials in the past 50 years. Marion County has 110 cemeteries--56 of them are pioneer cemeteries.

Next Meeting:

Next meeting, in person, is Monday, June 29, 2026, at 7 p.m. at the Rural Fire Department in Knoxville (across from what was formerly Peace Tree Brewery). All are welcome!

Our War of 1812 Veterans' Cemetery Walk Was a Huge Success!

On May 3, more than 50 people dropped in at four cemeteries in Marion County that have War of 1812 veterans buried there.
They heard about how these men and their families came to Iowa and what prompted them to stay here.

Thanks to all who helped in any way or who attended!

Our Restoration Gallery contains pictures of several of the pioneer cemeteries that MCPCC has restored over the years; for the newest work, go to that cemetery's page. Our most recent cemetery to be worked on is Hull-De Witt Cemetery.

A Note on Cemetery Locations:

Under the "Cemeteries" tab, you will be able to see a map for most of the Marion County pioneer cemeteries. However, because the map "pins" the cemetery to the nearest 911 address, the cemetery can be quite some distance from the actual pinpoint. In some cases, you can see the cemetery actually located by name on the map nearby.
